An Overview of Infrastructure Projects under EAC

Development of infrastructure projects in the region on Roads,Energy,Railways,Transport,Communication and Maritime sectors is crucial for stimulating investments in many parts of the region whose potentials are yet to be exploited.The importance of infrastructure lies on the interdependence between the sector of transport, communication, and energy supply and energy acess.The infrastructure eases the flow of goods and services,movement of people as well as the industrial activities particulary manufacturing in the region.Currently the poor state of infrastructure and the absence of sufficient,adequate,affordable,reliable and efficient energy services for sustainable economic and human development remains a major constraint to the performance of the other key sectors in all the five East African Economies.However significant progresses have been madein the implementation of Projects and Programmes in these sectors.   The East African Partner States have the following Regional Infrastructure Projects.

♦Road Sub Sector-The East African Road Network Project

♦The East African Trade and Transport Facilitation Project (EATTF)

♦The Railways Sub Sector-The East African Railways Master Plan

♦Energy Sector,the projects under this sector are;

1. Electricity Sub-Sector
2. Petroleum Sub-Sector
3. Renewable Energy Sub-Sector

♦The Civil Aviation Sub Sector

♦Maritime Transport Sub-Sector

♦Information  Communications Techonolgy Sub-Sector.the projects under this sub-sector are;

1. East African Postal Automation Project
2. EAC Communications Regulatory Strategy Study
3. Broadband Network Projects
4. Lake Victoria Communications Project
5. The EAC e-governance Strategy
6. The EAC e-Health Strategy, and
7. The EAC e-Immigration Strategy

♦Meteorological Sub Sector;The projects prioritized under the sub sector include but not limited to:-

1.  Enhancing capacities of Meteorological services in support of sustainable development in the EAC region
2. Provision of Aeronautical Meteorological Services in the EAC
3. Harmonization of Issuance of Historical Meteorological Data in the EAC Partner States
4. Global Humanitarian Forum'Weather Data for All' Project
   

♦Water Sub Sector;the implementation of project in this sub sector includes but not limited to;-

1. Lake Victoria Safety and Navigation Project
2. Lake Victoria Regional Water and Sanitation Initiative
3. Lake Victoria Environment Management Project (I & II)
